Historyhttp://www.pentadyne.com/site/company/history.html2009-05-07T11:43:53Z

The development of what today is Pentadyne Power Corporation began in 1993 as a privately funded entity that sought to create a flywheel-based energy storage device for hybrid-electric automotive applications. Then known as Rosen Motors, founded by Harold and Ben Rosen (of Compaq and Sevin-Rosen Funds), the firm spent more than $24 million to develop and successfully demonstrate the world’s first microturbine/flywheel powered hybrid vehicle prototype in January 1997.

While vehicular applications held promise, stationary uses of flywheel energy storage would prove a more lucrative, more immediate source of product sales. Pentadyne Power Corporation was founded in 1998 to do just that. Flywheels were ideally suited to replace conventional lead-acid batteries commonly used in commercial and industrial continuous power quality applications. Paul Craig (former President and CEO of microturbine manufacturer Capstone Turbine) co-founded Pentadyne Power Corporation and acquired the intellectual property to incorporate the specialized flywheel technology into power quality/reliability solutions.

In 2001, Pentadyne hired its first employees and successfully demonstrated its flywheel technology for such applications. In mid-2002, Pentadyne secured its first venture capital funding – raising over $13 million – and moved to a new production facility. During 2003, Pentadyne successfully completed its beta field trials and, by year’s end, had sold its first production unit to NASA’s Glenn Research Center.

In 2004, the Pentadyne clean energy storage system was been named Product of the Year by Plant Engineering magazine, won the Frost & Sullivan 2005 Technology Innovation Award, earned A Perfect 10 designation in 2006 voted by the readers of Consulting-Specifying Engineer magazine and, as a part of Socomec power certainty solution, earned the Frost & Sullivan Product Innovation of the Year award in 2006.

In 2006, then-CEO/Chairman Paul Craig retired and Pentadyne’s Board brought in Mark McGough to establish Pentadyne as a worldwide leader in clean energy storage systems. An energy industry veteran with a 23-year track record of successes, Mr. McGough has led Pentadyne to new heights, with product launches in the European market, key channel partnerships in the US, EMEA and Asia, the first high volume production of its flywheel systems, and the industry’s first gross-margin-positive product sales. Shipments just in the month of September 2006 exceeded the total volume shipped in 2003 through 2005.

Pentadyne has been recapitalized by its leading group of investors, received the largest order in company history, increased sales backlog to triple-digits – and successfully completed the design and launch of today’s pace-setting next-generation product: the VSS+dc.

In 2007, Pentadyne was designated a Technology Pioneer by the World Economic Forum and its products were named Backup Power Product of the Year by SearchDataCenter.com, Power Conditioning Product of the Year by EC&M magazine and was a Buildings magazine Editors’ Choice Top Product Pick 2007.

In 2008, Pentadyne had shipped its 500th flywheel system (currently, more than 750 units shipped) and the installed fleet surpassed 2 million hours of commercial operation (4.5 million now). By mid-year, Pentadyne had surpassed the former market leader in unit shipments to become the world's leading manufacturer of flywheel energy storage systems. Our DoD contractor customer ordered nearly $5M in flywheel systems in 2008 for military sites. Due to triple-digit growth in 2006 and again in 2007, Pentadyne achieved a ranking of #162 on the 2008 Inc. 500 list. The company also ranked #7 among all energy companies nationwide. The Los Angeles Business Journal ranked Pentadyne #1 in growth among all private companies in Greater Los Angeles.

Pentadyne has become the OEM supplier of flywheel clean energy storage systems to several of the world’s leading brands of UPS systems, and has achieved its goal to become the world’s leading supplier of flywheel energy systems. Its systems are used individually and in arrays (a 4.5 MW bank of 24 Pentadyne flywheels is the largest to date) in applications ranging from data center/corporate IT to television broadcast, healthcare, laboratory, financial services, education, utility, electronic gaming, manufacturing, transportation, government and the military.

The Pentadyne flywheel is a short duration energy storage alternative that can supplement or completely eliminate the need for flooded/wet cell and VRLA lead-acid batteries in UPS applications. If used with UPS batteries, the Pentadyne flywheel serves as the first line of defense, isolating the redundant battery bank(s) from all cycling events. If used as the sole source of energy storage, the Pentadyne system vastly improves reliability, longevity, energy efficiency and uptime availability, in addition to changing downtime maintenance from many hours, several times per year to a single one-hour interval once every two years. That's the Pentadyne way to true reliability.

Table Based on: .9 Power Factor, .95 UPS Efficiency, 80% Loaded, No walk in time

Pentadyne systems can be sized to the load instead of the UPS nameplate rating because as load grows, additional flywheels can be added…something not feasible with lead-acid batteries.

Cost Comparison

While a Pentadyne flywheel costs more than a monitored equivalent 5-minute VRLA battery cabinet, it eliminates all the maintenance and string replacement issues common to VRLA batteries. This cost savings pays generally pay for the system by what would have been the first battery replacement interval and saves about $150,000 per cabinet over the life of the Pentadyne flywheel. Much higher reliability at much lower cost.

The floorspace needed by VRLA lead-acid battery cabinets for a 400-kVA UPS, including code-mandated access space — is nearly twice that of a similar capacity pair of Pentadyne flywheels (green). Compared to a one megawatt set of flooded wet cell lead-acid batteries, the flywheel footprint is nearly 80% smaller (orange).
Technologyhttp://www.pentadyne.com/site/flywheel-ups/technology.html2009-10-16T13:34:47Z

Flywheel systems store energy kinetically rather than chemically. Instead of dozens of 100-pound containers of lead plates submerged in sulfuric acid, flywheels use the inertia of a spinning mass to store and regenerate power.

Key advantages of high-speed flywheels

Faster, stronger, lighter, smaller

First generation flywheels, still sold today, were introduced in the mid-‘90s. They use a massive steel disk rotating at a relatively slow speed.

Kinetic energy is roughly equal to mass times velocity squared. So doubling mass doubles energy storage, but doubling the rotational speed quadruples energy storage.

Thus it makes sense to use less mass to create a lighter, more compact footprint, but make the material stronger and safer (hence Pentadyne’s carbon-fiber-composite flywheel cylinder) and spin it faster to maximize energy density.

Patented, bearing-free operation

Heavy steel flywheels have mechanical bearings that must be replaced every 2-3 years at a cost of thousands of dollars and the better part of a day’s worth of downtime. Not so with the Pentadyne system. Its small spinning mass is completely magnetically levitated: no bearings. This eliminates a mechanical point of failure as well as the friction, heat generation/cooling needs, energy waste and maintenance/downtime issues related to bearings.

Patented, pump-free operation

Flywheels spin in a vacuum to minimize aerodynamic drag. Other systems use a constantly operating mechanical pump to maintain a rough vacuum. Instead, Pentadyne’s award-winning systems use a patented molecular vacuum sleeve on the flywheel shaft. The shaft speed combined with the sleeve’s helical grooves maintain the system’s high vacuum (<5 millitorr, or >99.9993% evacuated). This eliminates a mechanical point of failure, energy consumption and maintenance/downtime issues related to a continuously operating mechanical pump.

Synchronous reluctance motor-generator

Pentadyne uses a synchronous reluctance motor-generator design that’s more energy efficient than permanent magnet types used in conventional flywheel systems. Permanent magnets are sensitive to heat and become less capable of operating to full capacity over time. This is particularly an issue in a vacuum environment. Pentadyne’s synchronous reluctance motor-generator design is somewhat more costly, but has no demagnetization issues even in temperature and vacuum extremes. This ensures performance of your Pentadyne system will not degrade over time.

Exceptional energy efficiency & minimal heat generation

Flywheels have many advantages over lead-acid UPS batteries, but energy efficiency hasn’t been one of them, until now. Thanks to the key technology aspects noted above, the standby energy consumption of a Pentadyne flywheel is a mere 300 watts, the same as the “float charge” consumption of a battery bank with similar capacity. Our competitor’s flywheel system uses 2,500 watts! That energy waste alone will cost you $3,000 or more in higher electric bills per year per cabinet. Then there’s the heat generation your cooling system will need to offset. Battery sets generate lots of heat, and competing flywheels vent more than 8,500 Btu/hr. Ridding your facility of all that extra heat further impacts your utility bills and cooling systems. In contrast, the Pentadyne system generates less than 1,000 Btu/hr.

What is a flywheel power system?

A flywheel power system is a “mechanical battery” that stores energy kinetically in the form of a rotating mass. This energy is immediately convertible to DC power. Like a lead-acid battery bank, a flywheel power system connects to the DC bus of a UPS, charging from the bus and returning power whenever the bus voltage droops below a programmable threshold. It can supplement or completely eliminate the need for lead-acid batteries in UPS applications by riding-through short duration power quality events and brief outages or until your genset comes on line. When used in conjunction with UPS batteries, a flywheel serves as the first line of defense, isolating the redundant battery bank(s) from all cycling events.

What is the GTX?

The GTX (Voltage Support Solution) is an advanced DC flywheel power system designed and manufactured by Pentadyne Power Corporation in Los Angeles. The GTX instantly supplies short-term power to the UPS inverter until utility power is restored or until an alternate power source (such as a backup generator) is available.

Pentadyne’s GTX is compatible with several of the world’s leading brands of uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems, and can also be used as a supporting voltage source for adjustable/variable speed drives as well as other industrial DC applications.

How does the Pentadyne flywheel work?

The heart of the GTX is a high-speed rotating group composed of a multi-layer carbon fiber composite cylinder with a titanium hub attached to an alloy shaft with an integrated rotor of a 4-pole synchronous reluctant motor/generator. It connects and appears to a UPS as any battery cabinet would. When the DC bus of the UPS dips below a programmable setpoint, the rotating group instantly supplies the needed power via its synchronous reluctance motor-generator.

Why use a flywheel instead of lead-acid batteries?

Compared to batteries, the Pentadyne GTX has higher reliability, vastly lower cost of ownership, near-zero maintenance, 99.998% uptime availability, much longer useful life, accurate state-of-charge monitoring, no runtime degradation over thousands of deep cycles, no health & safety hazards, insensitivity to temperature fluctuations and environmentally responsible.

In what applications are flywheels used?

The GTX is primarily used to replace lead-acid batteries used in continuous power quality systems. The GTX can also be integrated with adjustable/variable speed drives for protection against voltage sags and brief power disturbances.

Pentadyne focuses primarily on power quality applications and on emerging applications such as energy recycling.

How are flywheels used in UPS applications?

Used as a battery replacement or supplement, the Pentadyne GTX improves UPS reliability and reduces lifecycle cost:

Short-duration ride-through
Integrated into a UPS system without a generator, the Pentadyne GTX can provide protection against 99% of all power disturbances (the Electric Power Research Institute–EPRI—reports that only 1% of all outages are longer than 10 seconds).

Ride-through to generator
The Pentadyne GTX provides ride-through time to bridge the time gap until the UPS' standby generator(s) come online for continuous power during long-term grid outages.

Battery life extension/energy storage redundancy
In parallel with batteries, the Pentadyne GTX provides battery protection by being the first line of defense against short-duration outages. For longer duration events, the Pentadyne system bridges the time gap until the backup generator can accept a gradual handoff of the load. This isolates the battery banks from all cycling events, making them redundant and preserving battery capacity for longer life.

What are the key benefits of the GTX?

Any safety concerns?

Safety is paramount in the design of the GTX. Unlike a large metal flywheel weighing hundreds of pounds, the 25 pound Pentadyne flywheel will not fragment. In descructive tests, the carbon-fiber flywheel simply unravels into fibers and dust adhering to the inner housing like cotton candy. More than 30 different such tests were performed at Pentadyne to ensure that no part of the spinning mass could ever escape the housing.

The rotating mass is contained within two housings: a 2-inch-thick steel inner housing that surrounds the rotating group, and a separate steel outer housing. The inner housing is over-engineered to handle the pressure load and contain all the flywheel elements in the unlikely event of a rotating group failure. The cavity between the two housings is filled with a viscous non-toxic fluid that acts as a coolant during normal operation and as a hydrodynamic buffer if a failure such as this were ever able to occur. The inner housing is attached to the outer housing via break-away flanges so that the inner housing will shear free and rotate briefly within the cooling fluid that now acts as a hydraulic brake. This allows the energy from the flywheel to be dissipated safely within a few seconds, ensuring that no significant torque is transferred to the cabinet.

Underwriters Laboratories (UL) and TUV (German certification body) conducted thorough analyses of Pentadyne's patented safety system. Both certification bodies granted their seal of approval to the VSS+dc which is UL Listed and CE Marked.

How much energy can a single GTX unit provide?

On a 510 VDC or greater UPS bus, the GTX is designed to provide a continuous 200 kW for 12 seconds (or longer at lower outputs). UPS systems are usually loaded to about half their nameplate rating and have a 0.8 power factor, so one unit on a 400-kVA UPS at 50% loading will provide more than 15 seconds of runtime to bridge to a backup generator (which can usually assume a gradual transfer of the load 5-6 seconds after starting). For higher power requirements, longer durations and/or redundancy, multiple GTX units can be run in parallel without any communications gear. See the chart on our specifications page for a runtime guide or contact us and we'll work out the specifics for your particular application.

What is the energy efficiency of the GTX?

Average power consumption (standby loss) is less than 250 watts (i.e. 0.13% of 200 kW). Conventional flywheel systems use much more: 2,000 to 3,500 watts. This poor energy efficiency alone will increase utility bills by thousands of dollars per year for each flywheel deployed. The high efficiency of the GTX is due to Pentadyne's technological choices including:

operating the flywheel system within a high vacuum

using zero-drag magnetic levitation

high-efficiency synchronous reluctance motor-generator

having a liquid coolant system that activates only at higher temperatures (i.e., only if the system has performed a deep discharge or several partial discharges in frequent succession).

Can I adjust the charge current?

The charge current is adjusted via the control panel on the front of the GTX. The maximum charge current in UPS applications is limited by software to 50 amps. If your UPS can make more power available to the GTX, recharge times will be reduced. We invite you to contact us for details.

What is the operating voltage range of the GTX?

The GTX has a wide operating voltage range. It is UL listed for 350 to 600 VDC, as limited by UL standards, but it can connect at voltages up to 850 VDC. The GTX is designed to provide maximum power at voltages above 510 VDC.

How long does the GTX take to recharge after a full discharge?

After a complete discharge, the GTX will be back up to full power capacity in less than 2.5 minutes at 50 A charging current with a charging voltage between 500 to 600 VDC. Recharge time following a partial discharge event is much shorter. The GTX can be recharged to full power in the same time it takes to discharge if the UPS rectifier can supply full power to the GTX while supporting the critical load. Also, if another grid disturbance occurs during the recharge process, the GTX will instantaneously support the load with its available energy.

How many GTX units can be put together in parallel?

Just like battery cabinets, you can link an unlimited number of Pentadyne systems for higher capacity/duration/redundancy. No communications gear or software is needed to parallel GTX units, it's all built-in. Multiple-unit installations are common. To date, the largest array involves 20 units at a US government data facility.

Are communication links needed for paralleling?

No, there is no need for communication link between the GTX units for parallel operation. Each unit works independently from the others: just like battery strings, only more reliable.

Is the GTX noisy?

The sound level in normal operation is barely audible: less than 45 dBA @ 1m. Competing flywheels rated at 65-70 dBA @ 1m are hundreds of times louder.

How do I know when the GTX is fully charged?

When the flywheel is at full speed, the state of charge is 100%. The state of charge is clearly displayed on the control panel lcd screen.

What is the operating temperature range the GTX?

Operating: -4°F to 122°F (-20°C to 50°C); non-operating: -4°F to 176°F (-20 to 80°C)

Does the GTX have remote monitoring capability?

Yes, Pentadyne makes Microsoft Windows-based remote control & monitoring options available to enable remote interactivity with the GTX. The GTX can be remotely accessed through a local area network, the Internet or through a phone line via an optional modem.

What is the difference between low-speed and high-speed flywheels?

Low-speed flywheels are made of steel and rotate at 7,000-8,000 rpm. Low speed flywheels have certain advantages, such as relatively simple design. Disadvantages include high weight, low power density, larger footprint, poor energy efficiency, high heat output and relatively frequent and costly maintenance/availability issues.

High-speed flywheels use high-strength composite materials and magnetic levitation, which allows the rotating group to spin at much greater speeds without friction to generate far greater power density. Most operate in the 25,000 - 60,000 rpm range. While high-speed flywheels are more difficult to design, the finished product has the same or lower cost per kilowatt as low speed models, but offer distinct advantages, such as high power density, compact design, very high energy efficiency, very low heat output, extremely high uptime availability and exceptionally infrequent low-cost maintenance.

What are the key technologies used in the GTX?

The Pentadyne GTX includes several key patented technologies:

High speed carbon fiber flywheel

Five-axis active magnetic levitation

Integrated molecular vacuum sleeve

Synchronous reluctance motor-generator

None of these components ever require maintenance.

What is the warranty on a GTX?

The Pentadyne VSS+dc is backed by a 5-year standard limited warranty. Warranty service and extended service contacts are available directly or through our distribution partners: Liebert/Emerson Network Power, Toshiba, EHWA Technologies and Socomec.

What maintenance is required on the GTX?

Very minimal maintenance is needed. The only regularly scheduled downtime maintenance involves a low-cost capacitor replacement at six-year intervals. This service takes less than an hour.
That's it!

If ordered with the optional air filter, ambient conditions will determine the frequency of replacement. Replacement of the filter does not require any downtime.

How does this compare with other flywheels?

Pentadyne has solved the significant maintenance problems of traditional flywheels by removing all maintenance and replacement requirements associated with mechanical bearings, pumps, oil changes, etc. Those older technology systems require extensive and costly maintenance intervals that entail significant downtime.

Is the GTX front serviceable?

Yes. The system was designed so that all component modules are easily accessible from the front of the unit.

What type of power conversion technology is used in the GTX?

The Pentadyne GTX uses a bi-directional power converter to either extract or supply energy to the DC bus. The system uses high-power IGBTs (insulated gate bipolar transistors) and PWM (pulse width modulation) technology.

What is the nominal operating speed of the flywheel?

The rotating group spins at speeds at 25,000 (fully discharged) to 52,000 (fully charged) rpm.

Is there any vibration?

No, the system is entirely vibration free. Moreover, its patented magnetic levitation system is designed to compensate for any external vibrations, and the system is rated for seismic zone 4 (we make them in California, after all).

Does the GTX use mechanical bearings?

No, that's one of the major advantages of the GTX over other flywheel power systems. The GTX uses a patented five-axis magnetic levitation system. It consists of electromagnets (2 radial “X”, 2 radial “Y”, 1 axial “Z”) that levitate the rotating group so there is no mechanical contact during operation. This eliminates the wear and energy inefficiency common to all mechanical bearing flywheel systems.

The patented magnetic levitation system is completely maintenance-free for the life of the GTX (>20 years).

Does the GTX have a vacuum pump?

No. The design of the vacuum chamber (where the flywheel rotates) is factory sealed. At the top of the rotating group shaft is a maintenance-free patented molecular vacuum sleeve that maintains a near-total vacuum, a pressure level nearly a million times lower than atmospheric pressure. This eliminates aerodynamic drag for maximum energy efficiency. The sleeve discharge is stored in absorbers located in an attached evacuated housing. This configuration eliminates the need for the mechanical vacuum pumps used on other flywheels that require electric power as well as maintenance every 6-12 months and costly replacement every 3-4 years.

What type of motor-generator is used?

Pentadyne uses a synchronous reluctance motor-generator, which does not require the use of permanent magnets. This type of motor-generator is extremely energy efficient and one of the primary reasons that the GTX has one-tenth the electricity consumption of competing products. Unlike permanent magnet type motor-generators that are sensitive to heat (especially in a vacuum), performance of our synchronous reluctance motor-generator does not degrade over time.

How easy is it to install the GTX?

The GTX is designed to “plug and play.” The lightweight system (1,300 lb/590 kg) can easily be moved with a forklift, a hand pallet lift, or simply rolled into place on its built-in casters. No concrete padding or other special flooring requirements are needed. The system can simply be leveled and bolted into place on any common flooring, including raised flooring.

Does the GTX need to be secured to the floor?

Yes, the safety system relies on floor mounting, since gyroscopic force during a discharge could cause the system to move. So the GTX is simply bolted to the floor using four small anchor bolts. These anchors are very easy to install. The system is designed for front access service, so there is never a need to unbolt the system for maintenance.

Does the floor need to be perfectly level?

No, the GTX is supplied with leveling feet so that uneven floors can be accommodated. A bubble level is located at the top of the flywheel for leveling accuracy.

Can the GTX be mounted on a wooden or raised floor?

Yes, a mounting kit is available for these installations. There is no special floor requirement for installation.

What are the dimensions?

Width, depth and height are: 25 x 33 x 71 in (63 x 83 x 180 cm). These dimensions enable the system to fit easily through any door opening.

What is the footprint?

The GTX has a small footprint: 5.7 ft²/0.5 m².

How heavy is it?

The GTX weighs 1,300 lb/590 kg. This is about ¼ the weight of a comparable battery cabinet.

Is AC power required for the GTX operation?

AC power is used as a backup source and for initial parameter selection during start-up.

What voltage level is required for the AC power input?

Standard wall socket 120 or 230 VAC at 50 or 60 Hz.

How do I connect the GTX to a UPS system?

The GTX connects just like a battery cabinet: to the two UPS DC bus terminals and the ground connection.

The GTX has been integrated with UPS systems from all leading manufacturers via optional interconnection kits.

Is the start-up of the GTX a specialized task?

We recommend that a factory-trained Pentadyne-Certified Technician commission each new unit to ensure proper operation and to validate the system's 5-year warranty.
Case studieshttp://www.pentadyne.com/site/flywheel-ups/case-studies.html2009-02-18T17:47:28Z

Pentadyne clean energy storage has a lot of great attributes and advantages.

We’ve found that other broadcasters using our system particularly value these qualities:

No HVAC needs - Pentadyne systems need no HVAC, perfect for transmission sites. UPS batteries need air conditioned space – and plenty of it – to offset their heat production. Operating batteries just 10°F above optimum cuts their life in half.

Crowbar protection - Crowbar circuits protect broadcast equipment inductive output tubes from power anomalies by instantly throwing tens of thousands of volts to ground. It has to. One IOT can cost nearly as much as a Pentadyne flywheel. The massive crowbar inrush can kill lead-acid batteries in a flash, but the Pentadyne flywheel has no trouble responding to such needs fully and repeatedly for decades.

Near-zero maintenance - Driving up a mountain every few weeks to do battery maintenance, testing and replacement is no one’s idea of a good use of time and money. The Pentadyne flywheel needs only one hour or less of maintenance every 2 years (usually done at the same time as annual UPS maintenance).

Elimination of lead acid UPS batteries

What can a Pentadyne system do for me?

Pentadyne clean energy storage has a lot of great attributes and advantages.

We've found that the data centers and corporate IT facilities using our system particularly value these qualities:

Solid reliability - Lead acid batteries are the weakest link in any power continuity system. A Pentadyne flywheel can eliminate batteries and provide much greater reliability. They can also work in parallel with batteries as the first line of defense, taking all the brief hits and bridging the time gap to a smooth generator handoff. This eliminates cycling of the now redundant battery array.

Cost savings - Pentadyne own-and-operate costs are much lower than those of batteries. Over time, each Pentadyne system deployed saves $150,000 over VRLA batteries, even more if replacing wet cells.

Minimal footprint and weight - Compared to a 5-min. VRLA battery cabinet, a comparable capacity Pentadyne flywheel needs only half the floorspace (or 1/5 that of wet cells). Each unit weighs only 1,300 lbs, about 1/4 that of batteries. Without any floor-loading issues, you can roll it into position and install it directly on raised flooring, .

Highest availability, lowest maintenance – Batteries are the worst, but steel flywheels incur hours of downtime and tens of thousands of dollars in maintenance costs every 2-3 years. Rotary systems are even worse. But the Pentadyne system's only moderate maintenance (capacitor replacement, just like that for your UPS) is just for one hour once every six years.

Energy efficiency - Other flywheels consume 10 times the standby energy (and output 10 times the heat). That costs you thousands of dollars in higher utility bills every year for each cabinet deployed. Risky line-interactive "online" UPSs claim high efficiency under perfect utility conditions. But utility conditions are rarely perfect. So line-interactive UPSs must consume more energy trying to correct power quality issues. Pentadyne flywheels work with the best brands of efficient, double-conversion UPSs that completely isolate protected loads from utility anomalies.

Other valuable attributes include:

Half the footprint of VRLA batteries

80% smaller footprint than wet cells

Virtually silent operation

No concrete pad needed; can install directly to unreinforced raised flooring

Rolls into place and commissions in less than 60 minutes

No explosive gas emissions, fire risks or hazardous materials

No acid vapors, spillage or other safety issues

We've found that transportation facilities using our system with their UPSs particularly value these qualities:

Solid reliability - Lead acid batteries are the weakest link in any power continuity system. A Pentadyne flywheel can eliminate batteries and provide much greater reliability. They can also work in parallel with batteries as the first line of defense, taking all the brief hits and bridging the time gap to a smooth generator handoff. This eliminates cycling of the now redundant battery array.

Eliminates fire/explosion/acid-spill/hazmat risks - Using a Pentadyne flywheel instead of dozens of UPS lead-acid batteries eliminates the explosive gas emissions of those batteries as well as the fire risk and thousands of pounds of toxic lead and sulfuric acid.

Highest availability, lowest maintenance - Steel flywheels incur hours of downtime and tens of thousands of dollars in major maintenance costs every 2-3 years. But the Pentadyne system's only moderate maintenance (capacitor replacement, just like that for your UPS) is just for one hour once every six years.

This flywheel energy storage/renewable energy recycling technology has been proven in the London Underground, New York City Subway, and at the Paris and Lyon stations in France.

Advantages of the Pentadyne's energy storage/renewable energy recycling system for electric rail:

Absorbs braking energy - In station applications, the system captures and stores the regenerative braking energy of trains

Delivers acceleration energy - Delivers stored braking energy to trains leaving the station, boosting performance and reducing peak energy use and strain on the infrastructure

Cuts resistor bank heating - By capturing and storing the energy normally wasted to resistor banks, the Pentadyne system cuts energy use both by eliminating unnecessary resistor heat production and the station's HVAC demands to remove that excess heat

Mitigates voltage dips - By pumping stored renewable energy into the 3rd rail or catenary system when voltage dips below a programmable level, the Pentadyne system prevents DC voltage dips, improving performance; this is true both for in-station and wayside between (or instead of) substations

Reduces headway - By supporting proper voltage, you get ALL the performance that was built into your rolling stock

Enables higher capacity - With improved voltage support, you can deploy more cars and trains

Eliminates slowdowns - Deploying a Pentadyne rail system between substations eliminates the low voltage problems that cause slowdowns

Cheaper than a substation - Configurable from 1 MW to 8 MWs or more, Pentadyne rail systems cost less than a similar sized substation, can be deployed more rapidly, and cost less to operate
