Specifications
The Pentadyne VSS+dc is a short duration energy storage device that can supplement or completely eliminate the need for lead-acid batteries in UPS applications. If used with UPS batteries, the Pentadyne flywheel serves as the first line of defense, isolating the redundant battery bank(s) from all cycling events. If used as the sole source of energy storage, the Pentadyne system vastly improves reliability, longevity and uptime availability, in addition to changing downtime maintenance from many hours, many times per year to a single one-hour interval once every six years. That's the Pentadyne way to true reliability.
Pentadyne’s VSS+dc system is compatible with several of the world’s leading brands of uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems. It has the lowest maintenance needs and highest uptime availability of any UPS energy storage product on the market.
Pentadyne systems can be sized to the load instead of the UPS nameplate rating because as load grows, additional flywheels can be added…something not feasible with batteries. Flywheels can be added without ever interrupting the load.
Cost Comparison
While a Pentadyne flywheel costs more than an equivalent VRLA battery cabinet, it eliminates all the maintenance and string replacement issues common to VRLA batteries. This cost savings pays for the system in 2 to 3 years and saves well in excess of $100,000 per cabinet deployed over the 20-year major maintenance intervals for the Pentadyne flywheel.
Footprint Comparison
The floorspace needed by VRLA battery cabinets for a 300-kVA UPS, including code-mandated access space — is nearly twice that of a similar capacity pair of flywheels (green). Compared to a one megawatt set of wet cells, the flywheel footprint is nearly 80% smaller (orange).
